Adam Sandler to Receive the Maltin Modern Master Award at SBIFF 2026
The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF) has announced that Adam Sandler will receive the Maltin Modern Master Award on February 5, 2026, at the 41st annual festival. The evening will include an on-stage conversation with legendary film critic Leonard Maltin, celebrating Sandler’s remarkable career—from comedy icon to acclaimed dramatic actor.
Best known for his comedic classics like The Waterboy and The Wedding Singer, Sandler continues to expand his range. His latest film, Jay Kelly, directed by Academy Award nominee Noah Baumbach, stars Sandler as a Hollywood manager opposite George Clooney. The role has been praised for its emotional honesty, humor, and vulnerability—further proof of Sandler’s evolution as a dramatic performer.
“Adam Sandler won me over when he sang ‘The Hanukkah Song’ on SNL,” said Leonard Maltin. “I love that he’s left his comfort zone and delivered potent performances in Uncut Gems and Jay Kelly. I can’t wait to share the stage with him in Santa Barbara.”
The Modern Master Award, established in 1995 and renamed in 2015 to honor Leonard Maltin, recognizes individuals who have significantly enriched the world of cinema. Past recipients include Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Javier Bardem, Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett, George Clooney, and Christopher Nolan.
Over his three-decade career, Sandler has built an impressive legacy as an actor, writer, producer, and musician. His recent projects include the record-breaking Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix, Spaceman with Carey Mulligan and Paul Dano, and You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah, which became a fan favorite. He also co-wrote and voiced the animated hit Leo, the most-watched animated film in Netflix history.
Sandler earned critical acclaim for his performances in Hustle and Uncut Gems, winning awards from the National Board of Review and the Independent Spirit Awards. His films have collectively grossed more than $3 billion worldwide, and his comedy albums have sold over six million copies. In 2023, he received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, cementing his status as one of the most beloved entertainers of his generation.
The 41st Santa Barbara International Film Festival runs February 4–14, 2026, featuring screenings, panels, Q&As, and tributes across the city, including at the historic Arlington Theatre and the soon-to-open SBIFF Film Center. Passes are available now at sbiff.org.
Last year’s festival drew global attention with over 200 films from 60 countries, celebrating more than 50 Oscar winners and nominees. Santa Barbara once again looks set to be one of the most exciting stops on the awards-season circuit.
