The Rincon Classic is the oldest and most iconic surf contest in Santa Barbara’s storied surf history—and the place where legends are made. Held at Rincon, known as the Queen of the Coast, this locals-only event brings together generations of the area’s best surfers for a rare and deeply rooted celebration of surf culture.
Founded in 1979 by Roger Nance, Jeff White, and a dedicated group of local surfers, the Classic ran for 17 consecutive years before going dormant in 1996. It was revived in 2001 by Chris Keet and the Surf Happens crew, carrying the tradition forward with true grassroots energy and strong community support. Today, the event continues to honor its past while showcasing both legendary names and the underground locals who quietly define the Rincon lineup.
With a six-week waiting period designed to ensure Rincon is breaking at her finest, the Classic has hosted icons like Tom Curren, Bobby Martinez, Dane Reynolds, and many more—alongside rising talents who represent the future of Santa Barbara surfing. Running February 7–8, the Rincon Classic remains a powerful expression of local pride, surf heritage, and respect for one of the most revered waves in the world.
